Claudia Rogge, whose fascination with the role of the individual in society manifests itself visually in her large-format photographs, currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. Using human figures as symbols, her compositions speak to the viewer in code, each “character” being endowed with a discrete meaning unto itself. This meaning is modified by the presence and position of the other “characters” (figures) relative to it within the picture’s space. Rogge thus creates a complex visual language, frequently layering this with words and text written on the figures themselves. Both forms of communication are partially obscured, leaving the viewer with an intuitive – rather than explicit – sense of meaning. Her works invite an ever-tantalazing kaleidoscope of interpretations.
