The career of Hubertus von der Goltz began – remarkably – with two formal apprenticeships in piano building at Steinway & Sons in Hamburg (1961 – 1964) and Berlin (1964 – 1967). In 1968, he began studying architecture at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Although he later transferred to the art department, von der Goltz’s career following his graduation in 1977 was illuminated at regular intervals with prestigious awards for architectural designs.

This affinity for architecture is revealed in von del Goltz’s installations, as they are most frequently found attached to buildings, towers and archways. Silhouetted against the backdrop of everyday life, his anonymous figures highlight the delicacy with which we move through our existence as they gingerly traverse finely-drawn paths in space – visual metaphors for the manner in which we navigate the subtly balanced landscapes of our lives.
