Two bathrobes stand side by side, painted in tones of deep red and black. They evoke
Crushed velvet and seem to glow from within, like embers. The garments are animated but not filled by a human body. Bathrobes are a part of personal iconography Dine recycles throughout his art, stand-ins for the artist's self-portrait. Dine was, along with Allan Kaprow, a founder of Happerings, the improvisational 1960's performances that Contributed to the beginnings of Pop Art. Later in his career. Dine turned away from Pop, which he considered a youthful experiment. Since the 1970's, Dine's paintings, prints, and drawings have been more concerned with painterly effects than with sensationalism, inspired by Historical European artists like Balthus and contemporaries like Francis Bacon. However, the electric often autobiographical subjects of Dine's Art- from fans and screwdrivers to fairy tale animals-still retain Pop's notion that all of Culture. High and low, is recipe subject matter for art.
