Aurora Cañero
Born 1940 in Madrid, Spain.
The concern for statuary and the desire to represent the man are the cornerstones of the work of Aurora Cañero, who has been able to modulate their approaches without being led by contextual tendencies that either falls into a radical academicism or surrender. Unthinkingly to an experimental search that seems legitimized only because it is characteristic of a dogmatic contemporarily. Javier Rubio Nomblot has pointed out that the sculptures of Aurora Cañero enclose the tension, "Between what has just happened - a barely suggested past - and what is going to happen next - hallucination, movement and metamorphism. Your work tells a decisive event that moment in which the man who lives in the center of the universe reaches his moment of truth." A singularly subtle narrative tendency that makes the pieces of Aurora Cañero define a small world where things happen that are on the edge of the fantastic or, at least, unaccustomed. Daydreaming and curiosity are subjective states that determine the positions of Aurora Cañero's sculptures. In its aesthetics, the use of the pedestal as a rhetorical part of the work is especially significant: stairs, circles, trampolines, boats resting on oars, and rectangular shapes on which the figures stand.
The poetics of Aurora Cañero try to recover that dimension of the monumental, with the awareness that the collective narrative is completely dismantled, without therefore establishing a tax scale. What he presents are not of course memories of heroic events, but bodily dispositions that have something of fiction: monuments to imaginary forms of subjectivity. One of the issues on which the works revolve is that of nudity, which reveals the character of cultural artifice of our clothing. Another plastic concern is the one that tries to show the relation of the pair, naked in two circles, sitting or lying on a boat; the man and the woman are close, but deep down, very distant, the tenderness that keeps them in touch is something precarious, for the moment they live in silence, they recognize the exile of love.
The task of this sculptor is to incarnate, in his rigorous works, the mystery, to give an expressive channel to the emotions, with a mixture of strangeness and fine sense of humor. Identity remains as an enigma, even when we have no other protection than the skin, the subjective story continues to manifest its depth: the curious gaze knows the abyss of passion and, therefore, needs to avoid falling by holding on to those ramifications that we call stories, Which are not only constructed with words but with fascinating traces, objects or figures.
