Elizabeth Murray

(b. 1940)

 

Elizabeth Murray, born in Chicago in 1940, completed her Bachelor of Fine Art degree at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1962 and received her Master’s from Mills College in Oakland, California in the year 1964.  She has earned numerous prizes, awards and honorary degrees, and has served as visiting faculty at several prestigious institutions, including The Art Institute of Chicago, Princeton University and Yale University. Since her inclusion in the 1972 Annual Exhibition: Contemporary American Painting at the Whitney Museum of American Art, she has exhibited her work in more than sixty solo exhibitions around the world. Murray was given a major retrospective in 1987-88 by the Dallas Museum of Art, the Albert and Vera List Visual Arts Center at MIT and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Her work belongs to over forty public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
